I was born and raised right here in central Iowa. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree from Central College in Pella IA were I studied health sciences as well as music. I received my Doctorate of Chiropractic from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport Iowa in 1998.
Like most people, there is usually a story behind why I chose to be a chiropractor. I always knew that I wanted to work in a field were helping people was the basis of my day. I just assumed that it would be in the medical field. At a young age medicine was all I knew, it’s where my parents took me when I was sick, and hey, I was a fan of MASH on TV. Medicine was everywhere and it was cool.
Then, my life hit a bump in the road.
My father developed cancer when I was 14. It ended up taking his life when I was 16 and my perceptions about medicine began to change.
During my father’s battle with cancer, the medical field was ultimately helpless and the treatment they gave him just seemed to sap his strength and steal his dignity. I began to search for a way to help people that did not involve surgery or loading them up with unnatural chemicals. This left me wondering what career path to go down.
After several years of uncertainty, a family friend took me aside and suggested chiropractic. As one who had never had “Back Pain” I had never been to one and failed to see what the point was. However, this friend took the time to tell me a little about the scope of chiropractic and how it benefited people of all conditions, not just back pain. That helped me to make up my mind and dedicate myself to the application of chiropractic and more importantly, to the task of educating people to a more complete understanding of health and what role chiropractic could have in helping them to get to their health goals.
In my free time I enjoy skiing, motorcycling, cooking, and reading. I am also very involved in the West Des Moines United Methodist Church. I would not be where I am today without the ongoing support of my wife, Michelle, and out beautiful daughter Chloe.
